Kansas City Zoo Workshops, Overnights & Zoomobiles

The Kansas City Zoo offers a variety of opportunities for Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts including workshops, overnights, and Zoomobiles.

For all programming (unless otherwise noted):

Cost Per Girl:
Cost of Workshop:
Girl Fee: $15 ($13.50 FOTZ members) Cost includes workshop and all needed supplies. It does not include zoo admission.

Cost of Overnight:
Cost per person: $30 per person ($27 FOTZ Members). Cost includes breakfast and all supplies. It does not include admission to the zoo.  Troops must maintain adult/girl ratios but at minimum 1 chaperone per 10 girls required.

Where:  Kansas City Zoo located at 6800 Zoo Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64132.

How to register:  Pre-registration is required for all workshops and overnights. Register online at the Kansas City Zoo’s website or download a printable request form to mail or fax to us. Please read the zoo’s registration and cancellation policies prior to registering. Troops must maintain adult/girl ratios. Deadline for registration is 3 weeks prior to the program date.

Kansas City Zoo STEM Days!

Program Name:  STEM Zoo Workshops: Animal Behavior and Health (STEM Day 1)

Who:  Juniors and Cadettes

When: Saturday, September 12, 2015  from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

What:  Animal behavior and health is exceptionally important at the zoo. Gain an understanding about how our veterinary and keeper staff help to keep the zoo’s animals healthy. Scouts will have the opportunity to conduct their own animal research at the zoo and analyze their data.

Cost Per Girl: $27 FOTZ Member; $30 Non FOTZ Member

Program Name:  STEM Zoo Workshops: Animal Husbandry and Training (STEM Day 2)

Who:  Juniors and Cadettes

When: Saturday, September 19, 2015  from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

What:  Delve into what it takes to take care of the zoo’s animal collection. Girl Scouts will learn about the science behind animal nutrition as we take a behind the scenes tour of the zoo’s animal nutrition kitchen, gain a better understanding about what goes into training some of the zoo’s animals by one of the zoo’s keepers, and explore why enrichment is so important for the zoo’s animals through inquiry and hands on exploration of real zoo enrichment items as they engineer their own animal enrichment.

Program Name:  STEM Zoo Workshops: Horticulture (STEM Day 3)

Who:  Juniors and Cadettes

When: Saturday, October 3, 2015  from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

What:  Are you ready to put your green thumb to the test? Girl Scouts will get dirty as they get a hands-on opportunity to work alongside the zoo’s horticulture staff. Explore the importance of creating naturalistic exhibits as we “dig” into what all goes into planting plants in animal exhibits as well as in guest areas.

Program Name:  STEM Zoo Workshops: Exhibit Design (STEM Day 4)

Who:  Juniors and Cadettes

When: Saturday, October 10, 2015  from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

What:  Have you ever wondered what it takes to design an exhibit at the zoo? Learn about the needs of animals as we identify everything that goes into making a successful animal exhibit. Girl Scouts will put their engineering skills to the test as they identify an exhibit problem and develop a solution.

Program Name:  Girl Scout Day at the Zoo!

Who:  All Grade Levels

When: TBD

What:  All Girl Scouts in uniform and their immediate family only will receive a $4.00 admission fee all day.  There will be Girl Scout activities in the Deramus Lobby between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Zoo patches will be available for purchase in the Gift Shop.

Program Name:  5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals Workshop or Overnight

Who:  Daisy

When: September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12, January 9, February 13, March 12, April 9 & May 14 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

What:  This 2 hour Daisy workshop covers concepts that will help girls with their 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals Journey. Girls will have fun learning about animals and nature as well as understanding how the zoo takes care of their animals. Each girl will receive a journal containing activity pages that reinforce each concept discussed.

Program Name:  Wonders of Water Workshop or Overnight

Who:  Brownie

When:  October 13, December 5, February 6, & April 2 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

What:  Girl Scouts will discover the wonderful world of wetlands and learn about the animals that live in these ecosystems as well as wetland conservation. This program is designed to help girls on their Wonders of Water journey. Each girl will receive a journal containing activity pages that reinforce each concept discussed.

Program Name:  Eco Explorers Workshop or Overnight

Who:  Juniors

When:  November 7, March 5, May 7 from 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

What: Girl Scouts will go on a "Rainforest Safari" as they learn about the rainforest and the animals and plants that inhabit this ecosystem to help them obtain their “Animal Habitats” badge. Each girl will receive a journal containing activity pages that reinforce each concept discussed.

Program Name:  Navi-GATOR Geocache Workshop or Overnight

Who:  Juniors-Ambassador

When: You Schedule It!

Where: Girl Scouts will discover the world of maps, coordinates and GPS Units. Decorate a Trackable Digital Bug and explore the zoo using GPS units to locate hidden cache boxes. Each girl will receive a journal containing activity pages that reinforce each concept discussed. (Workshop is 3 hours)

Program Name:  Zoo mobiles

Who:  All Grade Levels

When: You Schedule It!

What:  Troops can also have the zoo come to them. Through the Zoomobile program, the zoo’s education staff will come to troop meetings or service unit events and bring animals, biofacts like animal skins, skeletons, feathers and other things you might not be able to come in contact with in a natural or even zoo environment. Program topics can vary upon request. For Jackson and Clay county troops, the Zoomobiles are free once a year. For troops in other counties the cost starts at $125 per visit.  To reserve call, (816)-513-5723 and provide the following: name, phone number, email address, program address, date/time, audience age and number in audience.
