    Learn the four forces of flight that airplanes overcome to take to the air with the birds and about the control surfaces and instruments pilots use to make that happen. Girls will explore flight by constructing paper airplanes and testing their designs. Next, leave the round Earth and voyage towards the stars where you will learn about rockets and human space flight. Each girl will make a rocket and use liquid and solid fuel to propel their rocket skywards. Investigate careers in the space program and learn about the many women who have participated in space exploration.

    Look up and see the space above your heads. Explore the Solar System, Milky Way Galaxy and the Universe using telescopes and computers. At this workshop, you’ll make a road map to the night sky that will be of use for 5,000 years! You’ll also learn how astronomers use light to study the stars, the nursery of stars and planets forming. Learn about the magic of light and how your eye, telescopes and camera all use light.

    A small group of KU graduate students will lead Girl Scout Troops on a nature walk around the Girl Scout campground (or other designated nature areas) to discover the biodiversity of Kansas (or Missouri). Girl Scouts will learn how to use field guides to identify what they observe in the wild. They will also learn how naturalists capture and preserve specimens such as plants, animals, insects, and fossils. Using what they have learned, Girl Scouts will then work as a group to create their own specimen collection that is representative of the local habitat. Content will be adjusted for the age of the troop level participating. (Length: ~2 hours; ideally on two different occasions)

    In this exercise, KU graduate students will lead Girl Scouts through a simple extraction of their own DNA, which they can take home with them! The graduate student leaders will also introduce the concept of genomics/genetics to students, and what they can teach us about ourselves, our health, and the diversity of life on earth.     Brownies can enjoy this activity as part of their Wonders of Water Journey but the event is available for Troops from all levels. KU graduate students in the marine sciences will give short presentations on their biology research and will then open up the floor for questions from Girl Scouts about their research as well as general marine biology career information. Presenters will bring specimens from their research for students to look at after the talks are over, so that the Girl Scouts can get a first-hand look at what marine biologists work on. Exact research topics may vary per date but may include jellyfish and their relatives and the parasites of sharks and rays! Content will be adjusted for the age of the troop level participating.  (Length: 45min-1hr)
