    After learning about equipment, safety and challenge by choice, you will first practice on the ground and then head to the top of the 40 foot tower. Once at the top, professional staff will make sure you are clipped in and you will rappel down the wall. Starting on lower platforms inside of the tower, you will have the opportunity to gain confidence and practice before moving up the tower and to the outside. Beginning rappelling is a great chance to learn new skills or brush up on old skills before heading to the advanced rappelling session.

    A small group of KU graduate students will lead Girl Scout Troops on a nature walk around the Girl Scout campground (or other designated nature areas) to discover the biodiversity of Kansas (or Missouri). Girl Scouts will learn how to use field guides to identify what they observe in the wild. They will also learn how naturalists capture and preserve specimens such as plants, animals, insects, and fossils. Using what they have learned, Girl Scouts will then work as a group to create their own specimen collection that is representative of the local habitat. KU graduate students in the marine sciences will give short presentations on their biology research and will then open up the floor for questions from Girl Scouts about their research as well as general marine biology career information. Presenters will bring specimens from their research for students to look at after the talks are over, so that the Girl Scouts can get a first-hand look at what marine biologists work on.     KU students will introduce the concept of the genetic material (DNA) and how it is compacted inside the cell. We will also discuss how mutations in genes on the DNA affect the function of those genes.
