Counselor-in-Training
(CIT)

Counselor in Training (CIT)

Many campers dream about the day that they will be eligible to apply to become a member of the camp staff. In order to help girls prepare for these positions of responsibility, we offer several different tracks of camp leadership instruction and practicum.

Step one:
Be a camper! Attend any of our resident camps. Choose different programs and try a little bit of everything that interests you. Your camper experiences will make you a stronger future counselor!

Step two:

Counselor-In-Training (CIT)

Girls ages:

16-18

Dates:

June 17 - July 2
5-10 day internship

Be a leader; be a mentor; be a hero! Shadow camp staff to learn more about different jobs, perfect your outdoor skills and explore different ways of facilitating groups and making decisions together. You will begin your explorations at Camp Daisy on June 16 and get a chance to visit three Girl Scouts of NE KS & NW MO resident camps and experience our camp cultures. In July, each CIT will spend 5-10 days as an intern counselor in a camp unit at Camp Prairie Schooner, Camp Daisy, or Winding River Camp. Intern assignments will be made by July 2. Internships will take place during July sessions of each camp (see specific camp pages for dates).

CIT participants are selected through application process (application is available here or by calling the KC Girl Scout Headquarters). Personal or telephone interviews may be conducted depending on the number of applicants. CIT candidates must complete camp registration including the registration form, CIT application and camp registration deposit by March 21. Notification of selection will be sent in mid-April. Candidates who are not accepted into the program will receive a complete refund of their registration deposit, or they may apply that deposit to a different camp session.

Step three:
Apply for a staff position. Camp staff members are hired based on their qualifications, experience, references and criminal background checks. Minimum age requirements vary by camp. Completing a leadership program provides candidates with many of the skills necessary to excel in camp staff positions, however it does not guarantee that a future applicant will be hired.
