LRPP HOME THE GIRLS QUESTIONS

The board has approved a sustainable property plan that balances the rich and unmatched tradition of Girl Scout outdoor education with the realities of the council’s financial situation and the changing needs and wants of the girl membership.

The Approved Long-Range Property Plan
  • Camp Daisy will be used for troop and service unit camping, adult trainings and other special events including mother / daughter camping. At some point in the future, the council may look for opportunities to divest itself of a portion of the property not being utilized by program activities.
  • Camp Timberlake will continue to offer its current programming including troop camping, service unit day camps and challenge activities. At some point in the future, the council will divest itself of this property following redistribution of the current activities to another council property.
  • Camp Woodland offers a wide variety of programs and has very little deferred maintenance, however its sustainability is greatly impacted by its distance from a population center and its proximity to another Girl Scout camp. The council will begin work to divest itself of this property in early September 2009.
  • Proceeds from these future sales will be reinvested in capital improvements at the remaining camp properties and toward activities to retain the legacy of the properties being sold.

Camp Daisy Hindman, located in Dover, Kansas
Camp Daisy offers a variety of program options and accommodations, but suffers from the highest level of deferred maintenance in the property portfolio and low usage. Program options are duplicated throughout the remaining camps. The lodge and Patricia Chandler Troop House will be maintained for troop camping, service unit events and staff-led summer program. The Property Committee will continue to analyze this property so that it can be fully optimized based on its deferred maintenance needs.

Camp Timberlake, located in southern Overland Park, Kansas
Camp Timberlake is the council’s most popular camp in terms of attendance, but it has a high level of deferred maintenance and encroachment from the surrounding highways and development. As of August 2009, approximately 50% of Camp Timberlake is now a part of a flood plain. Also in June 2009, Johnson County began work on a sewer line that runs through the property. In addition to the sewer line and flood plain, Timberlake recently lost acreage when 179th Street was widened. These three critical factors indicate a trend that jeopardizes future program offerings at this location

Camp Woodland, located in Albany, Missouri
Camp Woodland offers a wide variety of programs and has very little deferred maintenance, but its sustainability is hindered by distance from a population center and by proximity to another Girl Scout camp, Winding River in Buchanan County. The camp’s diverse program offerings are duplicated at the remaining camp properties. The Property Committee recommends that the moveable assets, program features and cultural elements of the camp be moved to Winding River.

More on the Plan
  • Girls want exciting opportunities for swimming, horseback riding, ziplining, rappelling, canoeing and kayaking delivered at camps that meet their needs and give them room to grow and progress. We will retain girls by listening to what they want and delivering it — especially teens.
  • By selling some camp property, we’ll be able to increase capacity, program opportunities and utilization at the other camps. We will cut costs by consolidating our operations.
  • Current capacity for troop camping and resident camping will be maintained. We’ll have room for all of our current campers as well as room for growth.
  • This plan is girl-driven, and necessary — it’s also difficult. Emotions run high when we talk about closing and selling camp properties. We will work to preserve the traditions and the legacies of the properties to be sold at the remaining camps.

Benefits of the Plan
  • Programs will support the 15 outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
  • Save money by consolidating programs to fewer camp locations.
  • Retain capacity for current volume of troop and resident campers.
  • Attract girls and retain them with the kinds of activities they want, especially teens.

Fall Programs for 2009
  • Fall 2009 programs will go forward as planned. See all the programs available.
  • Fall troop camping is available at Daisy, Oakledge, Prairie Schooner, Timberlake, Tongawood and Winding River.

Council Property Portfolio Following Long-Range Property Announcement
  • Camp Daisy will be available for troop and service unit camping, staff-led summer program, special events and training opportunities.
  • Camp Prairie Schooner will be available for troop camping, staff-led summer program, challenge activities and leadership opportunities for teens. Service unit day camps can also be scheduled at Prairie Schooner beginning summer 2010.
  • Camp Oakledge will be available beginning September 2009 for troop, service unit and family camping. Summer resident camp program will resume in 2010. Oakledge will become the destination camp for Girl Scouts, 3rd through 12th grade. Bus transportation will be available.
  • Camp Tongawood will be available for service unit day camps and special events, troop camping and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math or plugged-in) programs. Camp Tongawood will increase its day camp capacity over the next three years. Wetlands programs will be more fully developed and strategic partnerships will be pursued for continued support.
  • Camp Winding River will be available for service unit day camps, troop camping, weekend horse programs and staff-led summer program. Equestrian programs will feature activities for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts and equestrian leadership opportunities for teens.
  • Camp Timberlake will be available for service unit day camps, troop camping and challenge activities until redistribution of these current activities takes place.
