Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri is one of 36 councils participating in a national pilot project called Girl Scouts Forever Green. This project serves as a vehicle to help girls develop their leadership skills to impact the environment by working with schools and community partners to improve air quality, energy use, water use, waste management and the use of green space.
Since December 2009, several troops have been working on specialized projects to improve our environment. As our pilot project nears completion and Girl Scouts of the USA prepares to launch Forever Green to all councils across the country, we invite all Girl Scouts to take part in one or all of the projects below.
Girl Scouts Go Green with Glass Recycling - March 12 through April 2
Did you know your empty glass containers can be collected and recycled for various uses?
We are excited to announce a glass recycling promotion encouraging the participation of our troops and families. The troop that recycles the most glass will win a local field trip where the glass is recycled. See more details below!
We are working on a pilot project with the Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7 (EPA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Region 7 (HUD) to further develop our environmental curriculum.
We challenge our troops and families to recycle glass from March 12 – April 2. Local collection sites are located throughout the Kansas City metro:
Ripple Glass has many collection bins throughout the city – see a collection bin near you.
You can also use other recycling centers that may be closer to you – see a complete list of centers
Participating troops should download the form below to enter recycling results. Forms should be returned to the council office on or before Friday, April 2. You may fax, e-mail or mail the completed form following the instructions found on the form.
- The 20 troops that recycle the greatest amount of glass will receive a Girl Scouts Forever Green Patch.
- The overall top glass-recycling troop will receive a special tour of the Ripple Glass Manufacturing Plant to see how recycled glass is made into insulation.

Camp Prairie Schooner / Ess Road Clean-Up Day - Saturday, May 1
Pack your work gloves, grab a friend (or troop) or two, and come on out to Camp Prairie Schooner for the annual Ess Road Cleanup! Once at camp, you'll be joined by camp neighbors, council staff, and other troops to work together to pick up trash along the road to Camp Prairie Schooner. Last year Girl Scouts, family, friends and neighbors collected more than 65 bags of trash, tires, lumber and more. What a GREAT opportunity for a troop community service project or family event that will help keep the community surrounding Camp Prairie Schooner look welcoming and beautiful! Snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the event in Neal Lodge.
