Become a Girl Scout Forever Green Troop
Vision: Girl Scouts will be at the forefront of environmental sustainability, leading schools and communities in using resources wisely.
Project: Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri is one of 36 councils selected to participate in this project. Girl Scouts Forever Green will be a vehicle to help girls develop their leadership skills to impact the environment by working with schools and communities to improve air quality, energy use, water use, waste management, and the use of green space.
Why: This Project was designed to enable Girl Scouting to meet all four goals of the 100th Anniversary which are: Showcase GSLE, Advance the GS brand, Raise a Significant Amount of Money, Increase Membership Numbers and Diversity. It will also be a vehicle to reengage alumnae.
What: Participating troops will complete a community action project (CAP) that addresses one or more of the five focus areas of Girl Scouts Forever Green. To participate troops will complete an application and mail to the Kansas City council office. Troops then choose a project with the help of the Project Guide that can be downloaded from the link above. The Project Guide will be the most valuable tool to assist you in deciding on a project. It contains general information on each focus area, a list of sample projects, metrics for each project and a vast number of online resources. It also includes pertinent information on utilizing Journeys and Badges. Once the project is selected, the troop must register their project with GSUSA by linking to www.girlscouts.org/forevergreen. This site will help you track metrics on your project.
Who: Girl Scout troops in all areas of all ages can participate in this project. Troops will partner with schools, churches, and other community organizations to complete their community action project.
General Guidelines: Troops will utilize the new journey, It's Your Planet-Love It, as the core program content for the CAP. Troops will participate in a CAP of their choosing. CAPs will be girl led. Troops will be in communication with a Forever Green Troop Advisor, Troops leader(s) will register with www.girlscouts.org/forevergreen/ to track metrics on projects. Troops will be required to participate in both a pre and post survey; troops should be "willing" to showcase their CAP at the Council Annual Meeting on April 10, 2010. Troops should be "willing" to participate in the council capstone event to be held in March/April 2010. Troops will partner with schools, churches, community organizations, and council indentified corporate partners.
Timeline: Girl Scouts Forever Green will kick off Sept 1, 2009 and culminate on May 1, 2010.
Funding: Currently, there is no funding for CAPs, however; the council is working to secure funding streams to be made available to troops. Please visit the Project Partners page for up to date information on funding and in-kind donations.
Other Volunteer Opportunities: A Girl Scouts Forever Green Task Force will be created to provide resources and leadership to the overall project and capstone event. Adults, Girl Scout Alumnae, and teen scouts, who have a passion for environmental issues, are welcome to contact the council about serving in this capacity. The term of service is October 1, 2009 – June 2010.
