Science is for Girls

Science is fun? Science is definitely fun! Through programs that allow girls to build self-esteem and cultivate skills, Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri is helping girls to discover their potential.

Take your girls on an adventure through science and encourage them to explore the endless possibilities awaiting them in the scientific world!

Council science programs help rekindle the natural joy of asking questions. They provide the opportunity for girls to become comfortable and competent with technology. Through hands on activities, girls can discover and explore the wonders of science. Just look at all the exciting programs Girl Scouts has to offer!

Don’t miss out, come get Plugged In! Learn about computers, astronomy and the world around you. Plugged In programs allow girls to explore science and technology through hands-on activities and the use of scientific equipment. All programs are held at the Environmental outpost at Camp Tongawood!

Crack the Case!
Explore the exciting world of forensic science and crime scene investigation. Become an Ace detective and help solve the mystery! Look at fingerprints, footprints, trace fibers and other mysterious clues. Examine the evidence and see if you can crack the case! This class is 4 hours with a 30 minute break in the middle. Leaders should bring lunch or a snack for their girls as it is NOT provided.

Aerospace
On-line games and activities involve girls in space exploration. Take a virtual tour of the Kennedy or Johnson Space Center, observe an actual launch and learn about current shuttle missions. Investigate careers in the space program and learn about the many women who have participated in space exploration. Construct paper airplanes and have an “air show”. Complete the “Aerospace” Badge.

Focus on Birds
Use binoculars and learn bird observation skills. Take a bird hike. Use Birding software to find out how to recognize birds and their songs, what kind of habitat they need, and their nesting requirements. Use the internet to follow bird migration. Plugged In!
on Laptop Computers

Troop Leaders can take Laptop Training and learn to use laptop computers to deliver one of our exciting Plugged In! Programs. After completing this training you will know everything you need to check out our laptop computers and get your troop, group, or Service Unit Plugged In! Come learn how to use a digital computer microscope. Use a microscope to take digital pictures and record microscopic movies. Put together your own microscopic slide show of pictures using special effects and digital paint tools.

StarGazers
Explore the planets, moon and constellations with the computer. Predict moon phases and star positions for your next camp out or birthday. Learn to recognize key constellations and planets.

Focus on Birds
Use Birding software to find out how to recognize birds and their songs, what kind of habitat they need, and their nesting requirements.

Tell It All!
Creat a troop newsletter or flyer. Learn how to design with Microsoft Publisher software! This program is particularly suitable for use by Cadettes and Seniors working on the Desktop Publisher IPP.



Girls are Bridging the Gap!

Not sure what events to plan for your next troop meeting? Check out a Bridging the Gap (BTG) activity tub! This program promotes the idea that every woman and girl can enjoy and excel in science, math, engineering, and technology.

BTG Tubs are especially designed for troops to easily explore the world of science while earning Girl Scout recognition such as a badge or Try-It. Tubs can be requested and checked out from your Service Unit’s BTG Coordinator. Click here to see the date for the next Tub exchange!

Each Tub includes detailed instructions and non-consumable or difficult-to-obtain materials used to complete the activities. Several tubs for each program age level of Girl Scouting are available. Check out the list below!

Color Wonders
Daisy Girl Scouts explore the magic of color mixing and separation by making their own “rainbow stew”, a colorful coffee filter butterfly and other related activities.

 
Brownies

My Body
Learn about brain power, reflexes, taking your pulse, and how to stay fit.

Numbers and Shapes
Explore origami, Mobius strips, jigsaw puzzles, shapes in our world and math shapes.

Science Wonders
Discover crystals, bubbles, paper-making, chemistry magic, magnetic fun and static electricity. This is a fun one!

Senses
Activities include make a better ear, visual tricks, tongue mapping and more.

 
Junior

Aerospace
Learn about building and flying a kite, paper airplanes, space launch and landings, eating in space and young astronaut training. Blast Off!

Discovering Technology
Make a robot snack, find out what ‘pulley power’ means, experiment with light bulbs and LEDS!

Geology
Collect rocks, learn the rock cycle, sort sand and check out some fossils.

Weather Watch
Learn about weather trends, cloud watching and weather stations.

 
Teens

Eco-Action
This tub will give your troop the materials and instruction to fulfill several requirements for the “Eco-Action” Interest Project Patch.

Math, Maps & More
Create a budget using a price list, maps, or computer software. Learn how to read a map, use graphs to illustrate an issue you feel is important and make future projections.

Build a Better Future
Learn about CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs and use it to make a design of your own, find out about five devices used to assist people with disabilities, and design your own amusement park ride!

Space Exploration
Find out more about today’s telescopes, design a human space colony, construct a ‘flying object’, learn about quasars, pulsars, novas and black holes.

Day Camp Science Aide
Looking for a way to put the skills you learned in Program Aide 101 into action? Want to help younger girls explore the amazing world of science, engineering, math and technology? Then come to Day Camp Science Aide training and learn how! You'll learn how to lead fun, hands-on activities and the best methods to teach them to girls at day camp. All teen day camp volunteers who have completed the 6th grade and Program Aide 101 are welcome. Click here for Program Aide 101 workshop dates.

Geocaching and Orienteering
Teen Girl Scouts can now sign up for geocaching and orienteering training and become an expert! After completing this training, you will be able to use a compas and a GPS unit to guide others through the woods. All you need is an adult with the traning to check out equipment and you are on your way. Geocaching/Orienteering class dates are avalable now. Click here for schedule and regitration information. NOTE: print the registration from and mail it along with a parent permission slip.

 
Day Camp Science Tubs
Looking for something new and fun for day camp this year? Then don’t miss out on this exciting program opportunity! Gain access to fun, hands-on activities in science, math, engineering and technology for girls of all ages. Program activities are easy and ready to use at any day camp! Day Camp Science Tubs will be available for checkout to any day camp. All you have to do is complete a quick and simple training and your ready to go. Plugged-In! at Day Camp
If your day camp location is Camp Tongawood, check out this program especially for you. After attending training, you will know how to facilitate one of the Plugged-In programs, and will have access to all the supplies necessary to run the program at day camp. There is a fee for this training (amount to be determined) which is necessary to buy supplies and keep the outpost open throughout the summer. Click here for more information.
