Horseback Riding

  Step into the saddle and get ready to ride! Many different levels of horseback riding programs are available for girls. Programs provide an introduction to horsemanship including safe practices and horse care. As girls progress through program levels, they gain skills and abilities and—more importantly—confidence in themselves!

Horse Groom - Level Two (replaces Weanling & horse rider part 1 badge workshop)
For girls in 5th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan – Level 1. Girls will review what they learned in level 1, will groom and saddle a horse, learn different breeds, learn colors and markings and ride in the arena at a walk and possibly a trot.

Girls in 6th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan and Horse Groom. Girls will review levels 1 and 2, learn about horse behavior, horse anatomy, ailments and diseases and how to tie a horse correctly. Girls will ride in the arena at a walk and trot.

NEW Horse Keeper—Level Four For girls in 7th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan, Horse Groom and Horse Rider. Girls will review safety, groom and tack their horse and then ride in the arena. This program is designed for girls who have completed all previous levels and would like additional time in the arena to work on riding skills. Girls will be challenged by taking their horse through various obstacles at a walk and/or trot.

Eat, Sleep and Drink Horses (replaces Filly)
An overnight horse experience that will satisfy any horse craving. Girls will have a chance to groom, tack and ride their horses. There will be two arena classes and possibly a trail ride. Girls will also cookout and enjoy evening camp activities all geared towards horses.

Prerequisite: Completion of levels 1,2,3 and in the 7th grade or older.

Horse Fanatic Interest Group
If you love everything about horses and want to learn more and improve your skills, then this is the short term interest group for you! The group will meet six times, once each week for two hours each time. Participants will help plan the focus and content of future meetings at the first session. Whether it’s performing, enhancing riding skills for English or Western, or learning more about owning a horse, your group will make the decisions.
 
Who: Girl Scouts in grades 4-12
Status: FULL
Dates: No sessions at this time
Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Location: Camp Daisy Hindman Horse Barn
Maximum: 6 girls
Cost per person: $90.00 for 6 sessions

Horseback Riding Information:
 
Who: Registered Girl Scouts in grades 1-12. A maximum of 10 girls at Winding River and 16 girls at Daisy Hindman will be placed in each time slot. Larger groups may be split into multiple time slots.

Required Dress: Long pants and weather appropriate clothing should be worn. (If gloves are worn, they must have a leather palm.) Shoes or boots with heels and smooth soles are required. A limited supply of loaner boots are available at camp. No sneakers, sandals, fashion boots or waffle soles are permitted. Riding helmets are provided for all riders.

Supervision: Troop first aid certified person and leaders/adults in SafetyWise ratio must stay at the riding arena with the troop while girls participate in this activity.

Cancellation Procedure: Sometimes we must cancel due to unforeseen circumstances including weather, volunteer availability, and equipment malfunction. Troop leaders can call a 24-hour “horse hotline” for weather cancellations. The hotline is updated early in the morning on program days. More information will come in the confirmation packet.

Registration: Download an Outdoor Reservation: Program form. Follow instructions on form and submit completed form with $10 deposit to council headquarters. Reservations will be processed beginning June 1 for fall 2008 (December 1 for spring 2009).

Girl Scouts are encouraged to support the Equestrian Programs at Winding River Camp and Camp Daisy. The programs are ‘By Girls For Girls’. Girl Scouts may participate in horse back riding or equestrian skills at other facilities when all Safety-Wise Guidelines are met.
