Horseback Riding

  Step into the saddle and get ready to ride! Many different levels of horseback riding programs are available for girls. Programs provide an introduction to horsemanship including safe practices and horse care. As girls progress through program levels, they gain skills and abilities and—more importantly—confidence in themselves!

Horse Crazy—An Introduction to Horses
Girl Scout Brownies in grades 2 and 3 will learn how to be safe around horses. Learn some fun horse facts and ride a horse led by an expereinced volunteer horsewoman!

Horse Fan— Level One
Girls in 4th grade and up will learn safety around horses, horse care and grooming, parts of the saddle and bridle and ride in the arena at a walk.

Horse Groom - Level Two
For girls in 5th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan – Level 1. Girls will review what they learned in level 1, will groom and saddle a horse, learn different breeds, learn colors and markings and ride in the arena at a walk and possibly a trot.

Horse Rider—Level Three
Girls in 6th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan and Horse Groom. Girls will review levels 1 and 2, learn about horse behavior, horse anatomy, ailments and diseases and how to tie a horse correctly. Girls will ride in the arena at a walk and trot.

The Mane Event
An overnight horse experience that will satisfy any horse craving. Girls will have a chance to groom, tack and ride their horses. There will be two arena classes and possibly a trail ride. Girls will also cookout and enjoy evening camp activities all geared towards horses.

Prerequisite: Completion of levels 1,2,3 and in the 7th grade or older.

*NEW* Horse Keeper—Level Four
For girls in 7th grade and up who have completed Horse Fan, Horse Groom and Horse Rider. Girls will review safety, groom and tack their horse and then ride in the arena. This program is designed for girls who have completed all previous levels and would like additional time in the arena to work on riding skills. Girls will be challenged by taking their horse through various obstacles at a walk and/or trot.

Father/Daughter Horse Fun Day
Howdy Girl Scout Brownies in Grades 2 and 3! Bring your father, grandfather or uncle and join us for a special event! Learn how to move around horses safely and take part in a fun horse related activity. Get your picture taken with you and your horse and saddle up for a special lead line class that you and your father can enjoy together with you riding and your father leading the horse.

Horseback Riding Information:
 
Who: Registered Girl Scouts in grades 1-12. A maximum of 10 girls will be placed in each riding group slot. Larger groups may be split into multiple time slots.

Required Dress: Long pants and weather appropriate clothing should be worn. (If gloves are worn, they must have a leather palm.) Shoes or boots with heels and smooth soles are required. A limited supply of loaner boots are available at camp. No sneakers, sandals, fashion boots or waffle soles are permitted. Riding helmets are provided for all riders.

Supervision: Troop first aid certified person and leaders/adults in SafetyWise ratio must stay at the riding arena with the troop while girls participate in this activity.

Cancellation Procedure: Sometimes we must cancel due to unforeseen circumstances including weather, volunteer availability and equipment malfunction. We will make every effort to contact your troop in the event of cancellation.

Registration: Download an Outdoor Reservation: Program form. Follow instructions on form and submit completed form with $10 deposit to council headquarters. Submit a separate form and deposit for each reservation. Reservations will be processed beginning July 1 for fall 2009.
